Suppandi on The Comic Project

Tuesday, March 24, 2009 Share: Digg Technorati Delicious StumbleUpon Facebook

Suppandi is a comic character that was featured in Tinkle, a servant whose masters changed very regularly, probably because he always did something foolish. He is not one of the cute looking characters we are used to, dressed in a half-chaddi and shirt/T-shirt, long nose, weird hair (like it’s oiled and combed flat). The fun about this character was that we knew that he was going to do something ridiculous but we always wanted to know “how bad is it going to be this time?”

Many of the Suppandi strips in Tinkle were ideas sent in by readers which was then illustrated by an artist. Can’t get more collaborative than that :-)

Check out this great write-up by comicology on Suppandi, Kalia, Shikari Shambhu, etc.

I found these Suppandi strips sent to me some months ago in an email chain that I usually avoid reading. Whoever scanned and put this online – thank you. So tell me, do you have any favourite Suppandi stories?

Here’s one Suppandi story by a reader Suspended Animation:

I remember he once ironed his master's legs.. because he wanted Suppandi to press them.

In primary school calling someone Suppandi was the ultimate insult.

Glad to see the lovable character from Tinkle here. TCP has variety now. Please also feature Naseeruddin Hooja.

@rahul: :-) Suppandi is fun
@soumyadip: haha yes and I had a friend who looked like that :-) he was a lot smarter than i would ever be though. And what do you mean by "TCP has variety now" eh? yeah i know, it is a bit monotonous isn't it..same stuff for 4 yrs. But Tinkle and ACKs are still in publication, and affordable, so less chances of posting. Hope you understand. Will look for a Naseeruddin Hooja. That was one interesting character too.

One of my favorite characters from Childhood days... No wonder, the new ACK media which acquired ACK & Tinkle, are now using Suppandi as their mascot.

I hope you remember that I recently blogged about Tinkle Special Collections featuring Suppandi, along with ones for Kalia and Shikari Shambu.

Here is the link for other readers of TCP to that post:

http://www.comicology.in/2009/01/tinkle-kalia-suppandi-shikari-shambu.html

They are still available on sale, so those interested can pounce on ACK Media Online Shop.

By the way TCP, did you get a mail from me on my new post at Comicology ?? Was hoping to receive your expert comments in there about the new topic/comic. :)

My favorite Suppandi tale was the one where he has a thrifty master. And the master shouts at him for wasting food, so that evening Suppandi gives him sweets. And after the master is done eating them, Suppandi informs him that the sweets were made from the leftover milk that the house cat got into!

Ho Ho ho! :D

And yes, would like to see Shikari Shambu as well!

Hi.. Great to see Suppandi strips here.. Do you have more of them? Tinkle had published one of my jokes as a Suppandi story way back in '91-'92 and am still hunting for that..

can anyone suggest good comics that includes supandi, hodga, kalia, shikari sambu...other than tinkle..in tinkle stories are repeating

@ Ajay: I guess I can answer on behalf of TCP, as the man is busy on his Great Indian Project :).

Suppandi is indeed a character which is close to our hearts. Do you know that Suppandi was indeed created over a story send by a Tinkle fan from South India. So, no wonder it shares the commonities we find with out fellow friends :)

By the way, Suppandi, Hodga, Kalia, and Shambu are all solo characters owned by Tinkle, and they have never appeared together in a strip so far, let alone a comic. As they are proprietory, you can't find them being featured in any other brand as of now. We got to live with Tinkle's offering... and the Suppandi, Shambu, and Kalia collection titles are still available for sale on ACK-Media site. Do check on.
