This is a fun comic. Hope you like it. Experimenting with a new image upload service - bayimg - instead of the usual imageshack. And instead of showing the thumbnails here, you can click it on the bayimg page. Let me know what you think.

Click here for the comic thumbnails at bayimg

I think that imageshack was better. 2 reasons:

1. For people who read the comics online, its more clicks

2. For people like me, who dowload it (using a script), the script will not work anymore. And looking at the new page layout, it doesn't look like a pattern can be used to fetch the images automatically.

I would like it if you stuck with imageshack and the old approach :-)

Irrespective of it, let me take this chance to thank you for all these comics man. They are a really nice alternative to working in office ;-)

good comic.

but i dont like bayimg personally as it takes lot of time to load, the comic pages are not in order & the next & previous links are not working and u cant read it online.
imageshack is better than bayimg.

and are there 23 pages in total (including the cover)?

What kind of script do you use to auto download these imageshack images? can you post the code here?

@frank:Hi frnd.... think u may have some problem in ur internet service..... comics through 'bayimg' not only read on-line but more EASILY [than 'imageshack'] as well.
And the 'previous/next' links also work fine , ONLY as i realise the 'previous' link leads 2 the 'next' page (!!) & vice versa

@TCP:plz stick 2 "BAYIMG"

Colonel Worobu:

Its a small shell script - but works on a mac - never checked in Linux.

Here it is anyway - try your luck:

http://rapidshare.com/files/39975088/download.sh

Just run it with the URL to any of the monthly archives (found on the right of this blog) as an argument.

e.g.
./download.sh thecomicproject.blogspot.com/2005_07_01_archive.html

It uses the curl command to download.

tcp,

bayimg seems better...except that there were 3 pages which were jumbled up...pages 6, 12 and 16.

in any case, i am planning to correct it and upload on rapidshare in a folder...will provide the url here for those who want to download the comic.

You can download all the image files in a page using any download manager's "download all links" option and then filtering only .jpg links or you can select only the images you want and then use "download selected links". I use Flashget but any download manager worth its salt would have these options.

Colonel Worobu said...

Thanks Navin and sendhil.

I downloaded flashget but there is no "download all links" option. Can you give a quick walkthrough?

Phantom And Mandrake Fan said...

Nice comic, keep Mandrake scans coming, just love these

Sendhil said...

There's nothing to it. Are you getting the other flashget options? If yes, place your cursor on a link (any link) and right click to get the "Download all" option. If not, What browser are you using?

Colonel Worobu said...

I have tried it on Opera so far. Lemme try IE and see.

Colonel Worobu said...

No...it is not possible to download links with flashget. I managed to get only th thumbnail pics. There are no "other flashget options".

Colonel Worobu said...

OK. I right clicked on the link and selected "Download All" option. I got a whole bunch of webpage files plus the thumbnails. But for the actual comic pages, I get only a "php" file :(. It does not follow the php link to get the actual scan.

Sendhil said...

I use Firefox, so I don't know about Opera. I have attached screen captures of me downloading all the selected files from this page. Please see if it is of any help to you.

Sendhil said...

The reason for you getting only .php links could be:
1. you tried the links before all the thumbnails had displayed.
2. For the first few pages in this blog, the imageshack links gets redirected, so you will be getting only the redirected pages. Try downloading from a recent blog page, keeping in mind the 1st point.

Colonel Worobu said...

I noticed that I did not have the flashgot add-on for firefox and downloaded and installed it.

I did the exact thing you show in your screen shots, but, where you end up with the jpg icons in the "selected items" screen, I end up with "my.php"!! :( I did this on the same files that you had showed (secret invention).

Windows sure sux!

It definitely must be frustrating. I don't know what more to do. Maybe my broadband connection makes a difference. Could you try opening the page containing the pictures completely and leave it open for some time (say 15 mins) before trying to download them. I know it is clutching at straws, but it don't have any more ideas. Let us know if it works out.

Colonel Worobu said...

Actually I do have broadband. It is just that the download does not work. Even without the download manager, if I click on the web browser's native "Download Link" menu item, it gets me only the php script and not the image!

So I am back to clicking on each image, wait for the page to load, and then right click on the image and save. Repeat this for each page in the comic :( frustrating...

Sendhil said...

If direct download does not work in any of the browsers you have tried (Opera, IE and firefox), that it means something wrong common to all of them. Did you check your firewall settings (if you have one) for any option regarding downloads? You could also check your hosts file and for any other data filtering program (like proxomitron , for instance).

Hope you resolve your download issue. It definitely must be frustrating for a comic lover to download images ony-by-one. Please let me know if I can be of any help.

Colonel Worobu said...

Dear Sendhil,

Thanks for continuing to help me out. I think the problem is that in all my browsers, the link for the thumbnails shows up as a redirect link, like this for example:

http://img146.imageshack.us/my.php?image=secretinvention22ls1.jpg

When you hover over a thumbnail, I think you get a direct link to the imageshack image. I do not use proxomitron at all.

Please let me give one more suggestion. Install "greasemonkey" extension from https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/748 in firefox. Close and restart firefox, and then install the userscipt "Universal Imagehost redirector" from http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/4372 . Just in case, close and restart firefox again. Now open the blog page and check if the links point directly to the images or still redirects.

I know it's lot of steps, but if it works for you it would definitely be useful for future downloads. I will keep checking this page for the good news. Best of luck.

Colonel Worobu said...

Hi Sendhil,

Thanks for your patient persistence. I installed the greasemonkey add-on but the userscripts site seems to be down. I will install when the site is up.

Question: is this how you managed to get the non-redirected urls to show up in your browser, or was it like that by default? The only diff between you and me is that I use win2K and you use XP.

Sendhil said...

Userscipt site was up last time I checked (I usually do it 3 -4 times a day).

For your question, I think I'm getting direct URLs only because of the script. I tried disabling the script and got only the redirected pages. I didn't think of the script before, because when I converted to Firefox a year back, I went crazy and installed a bunch of add-ons, scripts and styles, and forgot all about it when cooled off. I remembered it only now and shot off a message here to you immediately. Wish TCP would remove comment moderation, it's taking a long time for the messages to be displayed. Hope it works for you too. Let us know.

Thanks for stick with me for so long :) I will give the unscript a try again today and post my results..

by the way since your name sounds like a tamil name, have you seen the latest lion comics cowboy special this month? I heard it is superb. my copy is in the mail and i havent received it yet.

Colonel Worobu said...

I managed to install the userscript and voila! It works!!!!!

Now I do not have to pester TCP to upload ZIP links any longer!!!!

Sendhil: thanks man. you rock!

Sendhil said...

Glad you got it to work. Maybe TCP could add this somewhere to help other comic lovers.

To your earlier question, yes I'm a tamilian. As for the lion comics, I have been out of the comics scene for many years, mainly because of lack of time, and rediscoverd it only recently after getting broadband connection and discovering torrents.

I have a small collection of earlier lion comics (about 10 years old) which I still re-read when I get the time. My favourite had always been the anti-hero "Spider". I have searched various torrent sites for the english "Spider" stories, but always get results for spider-man only.

So, you are also a tamilian? Glad to make your acquaintance in cyberspace. Let me know if I can be of any more help to you.

Colonel Worobu said...

Yes sir, I am a Tamilian. (I think this is the first time a Tamilian headed the Jungle Patrol ;))

Lion comics has a nice special issue out this month featurimg Lucky Luke, Blueberry, Tex Willer etc. Dont miss it. I highly recommend it. Look up www.lioncomics.com for contact info.

Muthu/Lion is currently reprinting all Mayavi/Spider and other stories monthly. If you are so interested in buying Spider re-issues you should contact them.

Also check out the Muthu Fan blogspot:

Thanks for the heads up on Muthu/Lion Comics. As you said they are just reprints of old stories and nothing new. I will check my collections and see if I already have it before buying it. As for the Star Comics I already have that story from lion comics.

I came across this blog recently http://dara-indrajal.blogspot.com/, where the guy had published some covers of Lucky Luke comics (thouth in French). I'm waiting to see if he actually posts any of the story scans.

BTW, at present I am based in Madurai. My email id is sendhil(underscore)nathan(at)HotPOP(dot)com

Colonel Worobu said...

Sendhil,

They have a publication called "Comics Classics" where they reprint older stories. But Lion & Muthu ALWAYS come out with BRAND NEW Stories.
