Comic #165: Phantom - The Bad Ones

Sunday, October 08, 2006 Share: Digg Technorati Delicious StumbleUpon Facebook

"Anonymous" says "There was one Flash comic in which he comes across an abandoned flying battleship in space and finds a lone female passenger on it. One line she said, I still use that in my conversations, 'Bend a twig and break a star'. Would anyone have that issue and could they post it here, please? In English, if possible."

On another note, we managed to collect just over USD 3k and counting - and a lot of prayers for our friend.

Happy Birthday VinYoo urf Vindy!!!

After millions of years, and trillions of posts, I finally get a top spot!!! I would like to thank one of our production houses-Plan B Films, for sending me scripts for approval on a Sunday evening, forcing me to come to a net cafe, check the scripts, and then log on to TCP!!! Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha!!!

Found a new "old jungle saying" in this comic..
"The Pahntom's 'Hmm!' has sometimes scared strong men half to death."..
As anyone encountered this saying in any other Phantom comic ??

Sunshine said...

Nice comic. I love the way he scares the thugs.

@Shubham: No, I haven't read that OJS anywhere else.

About the flash comic, actually there were two issue. One in which they encounter the Dhreen Bettle ship with lone lady. Another when they stuck in time wrap again and relive the same thing but slightly different story. So which one you are missing ?

Hello Johnny Hotwire,
I guess it was the first one, but I would be real obliged if you could post either of them or both, preferably. The second one sounds more tantalising from what you say.

I always felt that Flash Gordon comics were superior to both the Phantom and Mandrake ones, they had a eeire dream-like quality to them, some of them at least and really stretched your imagination.
Anyone else have a similar opinion?
Regards,
Pradeep

A million thanks, Johnny Hotwire,

That was the one I was looking for, but..but.. and I do not want to sound finicky here.. and I am not denigrating our national language and all.. and it's not that I am not grateful, I definitely appreciate, appreciate very much the trouble you took scanning those pages.. but, tell you the truth, Mr Hotwire, I have to say 'Kaaran aur prabhav! Prithvi par tahni bhi jhukhao tho prabhav nakshatron tak hotha hai!' just doesn't have the same effect now, does it?

Now, that was my opinion, just stating it frankly. My apologies to you, Mr Garamtaar, if I have come across as imperinent.

What do you all think? I would like to hear everyone's *honest* opinions on this matter, I usually read all the English comics here, but just a few panels of the Hindi ones.

I think when you translate a book, unless it is by a very accomplished translator, you tend to lose the flavor of the original.

Reminds me of the translated versions of some movie, perhaps Godzilla or was it Jurassic Park. Them respectable dinos were referred to as 'Bhayanak chipkalis' or something like that. Made a fine mockery of the whole thing...

East is east and west is west and never shall the twain meet..Kipling bol gaye..

Cheers..

Shail said...

@anonymous: i have to agree with you. you tend to lose the original flavour of the language when you translate.
and it works both ways - i don't think 'I have mother with me' holds a candle to Amitabh's 'Mere paas maa hain' from Deewar ;-)

Revealed said...

@Anon: I couldnt agree with you more and I do the same, read all the english ones and start on the hindi and then stop. Not only cos it loses its flavour as you so aptly pointed out but also cos I have to translate the hindi back to english in my head and that's just too much work [-(, but to each his own and if TCP deems it right to post the hindi versions so be it, we still love TCP :p.

Johnny Hotwire said...

I have a english story also but its not a Indrajal print so cannot put here send me your email to pahantomcomics@gmail.com if you wish to read it in english.

Also I have read most of the story in both hindi and english and can vouch that Indrajal has done a good job in translating it and have same falvour as english version.
