Comic #164: Mandrake - The Mysterious Eight

Monday, October 02, 2006 Share: Digg Technorati Delicious StumbleUpon Facebook

Just in time for 2nd October :-) Was speaking to a customer who asked why it was a National holiday in India - so I told him it is Gandhiji's birthday. His immediate question was if Gandhiji is still a big figure in India and has influence on society to which I said that his influence is not as much because times have changed. In the same breath I said, if someone thinks his ideals of non-violence are no longer relevant, all they need to do is switch the TV on and change to CNN. He paused for a second - realised what I was implying - but I paused longer than that because I hadn't thought about it that way until I said it. So is Gandhiji relevant? Gandhigiri bolo or whatever...for all the good and bad reasons..for all his mistakes..and flaws - there isn't one guy who is more relevant than him in the current situation.

On another note, a very interesting thing happened on Friday. I got an email from a friend regarding another friend in India - that he had a serious illness and needed treatment that would cost more than he can afford. I sent out a message to L1 and Umbrella that something like this was up, and in about 3 hours on a Friday evening - between 2 continents, there was an immediate commitment of USD 1,500. 3 hours is all it took for a bunch of guys who had worked together to raise that amount. As I write this, it has gone up to almost USD 2,000.

We might be in different countries, caught up in our lives and not in contact with our friends at home, but when it matters - there is one thing that shows up - a big heart.

L1 and Umbrella, Bldg, Motku and several others who pitched in (and don't know this blog even exists) - this comic is for you

i especially loved the phantom FAQs

i claim 9th as it looks like only upto 8th position has been claimed so far.
Gandhi and his non voilance will always be something very hard to understand, but will be relevant once u understand ways to implement. and thanks to new Munna Bhai movie, that exactly shows the same thing, that how these can be implemented today. Gandhi had explained in his time how it could hv been implemented against british govt. so its just a matter of understanding.
my best wishes with your friend for a faster recovery. let me know if i can contribute something (on my gmail).

i just realized something a bit disturbing. i wanted to introduce my newphew and niece to this wonderful world of these comics.
then when i clicked link to page2.. imageshack brought out ad of some mate site with seminaked woman :)
not trying to be prudish but i guess i would have to find other ways to make this introduction

manthiram said...

btw...all dunno if you have seen this site...it is possibly one of the best comics i have been reading recently...considering that there is couple of years worth of stories on it, you might be busy for some time...

Hi TCP, about your friend in India. Wouldnt mind lending a hand. Let me know, you have my email ID.

Shail said...

@ tin tin: will get you the first position one of these days and get rid of my 'guilt' once and for all. :-)
@ revealed: it's because the poor guy suffers from (quote) chronic self pity (unquote)
..come to think of it, maybe he should change his name to 'The Thing' ;-)

Tin Tin said...

@Shail: dunno where my other comment went! but FYI, I'm a girl. Shail ~_ Snail. All the best with the first place tho..

Anonymous said...

@tin tin: oops. sorry!
i guess you are entitled to self pity then - being a girl called Tin Tin :-)

Templetiger said...

Shail said...

@temple tiger: unlike us veterans,:-) the guy is a newbie. we must show some clemency and give him the benefit of doubt.

The Comic Project said...

@abhijit: congrats
@indianmalang: I SO BADLY WANT TO TAKE THIS POSITION AWAY FROM YOU..but eZam said he wont interfere .gggggggrrrrrrrrr hehe
@shail: yeah it was amazing how people responded.... hey..and what is this...in the name of tin tin? 1 comic ago you thought claiming is not meaningful and now suddenly .. you claim for others? WOW...talk about palti
@shobi: congrats
@shubham: yeah..there was a time i could always find you lurking around the top
@icr: why #8? thanks for the links
@motku: yep...hope he gets well
@sunshine: i am lost about position..eZam wont intervene though he can clearly see mistakes
@obi: 7th? wow..no rule talk? And thanks.
@sunshine: yeah nice dialogues na?

@sketchy: thanks..not sure about your position tho ;-)
@tintin: chronic self pity? shail..snail....heeeeeeeeeeeehawhawhaw
@irvin: scan and send 'em baby :-) but no hurry..our contributors have sent in quite a few to keep me occupied. And welcome to TCP!!
@desiguru: pray for him..he needs prayers more than anything else.
@revealed: shail is testing the waters before he plays the great game.
@tintin: i am already confused about the positions
@anonymous: page 2 took you to semi naked women?????? what are you saying? it shows the proper page to me here??????? But i am glad you are introducing your nephews to the world of comics. And you can download the comic zip file for a better intro :-)
@manthiram: will check it out
@rs: will surely do that. a lot of people pitched in with financial support..the rest is upto how he responds. i guess strong will plus lots of prayers should do the trick
@shail: tin tin also represents brave, resourceful with a cute dog called snowy...beware!!!!!! ;-) Abhijit isnt a newbie btw..just doesnt comment that often
