I wonder how the crew on the NW flight from Amsterdam to Bombay would have reacted if the people exchanging mobile phones and "ignoring" crew instructions, had been white and not brown AND Muslim.
Mr Abdul Qadir Kolsawala said later that he was angry, but this is related to security and can happen in India too.
Makes me wonder:
- How a white guy and his Government would have reacted if an Indian airline had done something similar or even 100 times less
- This can happen in India too
But security comes first :-) Prejudice always rules.

@TCP: I believe in this day and age, it doesn't matter much when you are on the plane! One has to abide and follow the crew's instruction! What matter is Security and Safety!
Anyone who doesn't - well...they have to deal with the consequences also!

I completely agree with TCP's observation that things would have been seen in a different perspective if these were whites. These culturally & insensitive louts would just increase the divide.
I cannot for a moment imagine that twelve people of Indian origin in a foreign country decided that they will not abide by the crew's instruction and by coincidence they were also Muslims!! Oh my god, they must have been really smart terrorists.

TCP yaar. Although I was of the same opinion as you in the beginning, I found out that the ppl in the plane were not obeying orders of the pilot and crew and continued to cause a major disturbance in the plane.
Finally they were told to sit down and were detained.
You do something silly like that you deserve to be detained - regardless of your race or creed.

Second, one has to be careful and follow instructions of the crew in a plane cause anyone remember Shoe Bomber..anyone....he was trying and was stopped by alert passengers! So if there is one or a bunch trying to create mischief, we(that is passengers, crew, etc..etc) just might...just might be able to stop them cause now days no one can wear a suicidebelt etc and go in a plane. Probably they have to assemble any kind of bomb etc in a plane.
Although Dear Cloudy, you are right! Our world is one ugly world - UNFORTUNATELY - but why do you forget people like TCP, Old manmoz, you and others who come out and say good things about life and bad things about bad people. We are definitely unfortunate that we are living in such times but hay, one thing at a time!

There is misery all over..And the most interesting thing is as we are so called, 'developing', we are forgetting the lessons from our past..World War I, II, Combodia, Bosnia, Holocaust....some of which has happened in last 10 to 15 years!

@anonymous: Nice article..Agree with a lot of that. But we are a country that has seen trains and not planes. It is no justification for stupid behaviour, but I have seen my share of non-Indians behaving nasty and that despite them being "civilized". Not waiting for the plane to come to a halt before you get out of your seat is common everywhere. When everyone is of the same colour, no one notices. But that said, our behaviour needs a major change.

@bharath: Indians can get very irritating on a flight..but so do people from other countries. I recently read that a US college student packed some dynamite in his checkin luggage and he was taken into custody. When the case came up, the judge let him go because it was stupid what he did. Now take that and make it a college student from another part of the world with a name "Ali" or something similar. It won't be called stupid..It will be called terrorism! Brown is out .. no doubt. And we are helping it along pretty well :-)

hey TCP, check out in the net...bengali is not only an international language, but it's 7th in position according to no of people speaking the language..
Not all muslims are terrorists but all terrorists are muslims...
Instead of blindly jumping to the defence of the muslims, please acquaint yourselves with some knowledge of their religion, their aims and also read up a bit about the history of India, the partition of India, their declared goal of making India an islamic nation, if not by terror attacks then by strength of numbers.
