I know Bombay will recover tomorrow, faster than any city, any people in the world. It says a lot about our ability to get right back to business and all that. But for once, just this once, isn't it time to scream retribution? No. Don't go out and kill people. Don't declare a bandh. Stand up for one day, as one people and say to the Government, to the Police, to the Politicians - STOP F*****G US and give us our due - in terms of security, infrastructure and every single thing that we as a city have deserved for decades and now desperately need.
It brings me to a question though - why do we tolerate these incidents and the subsequent inaction and dramas? I know it's not patience when I see the mad rush to get into trains and buses. It's not tolerance because this was the city that witnessed and was party to the '92 riots. It's not indifference, because every time there is a tragedy, we just gather together and help each other out. I know we don't enjoy it because nobody can. Then what the hell is it? Is it the "chalta hai" attitude? Are we afraid of something? Or is it pride?
Are we not hurt enough? Are we not angry enough? And while we try our best to be professional day in and day out, don't we want to hold anyone accountable? Do we want madcap political parties like the Shiv Sena, an hypocritical BJP or an impotent Congress to be our voice during these times? Incidents like these do not harm the communal "harmony" because simply put, unless the politicians and goons mobilize to do something, our "chalta hai" attitude is a good enough reason to not hurt anyone. I hope we defy the call for a bandh which won't serve any purpose and will clearly tell every politician out there that Bombay won't listen anymore.
About a couple of years ago, after the Mulund blasts, L1 and I landed up at the office wearing a black armband. We got weird looks and while the smarter ones understood, no one joined us. The idea was not to get anyone join in but the response showed how people don't realize that it is important to express yourself. I know it doesn't do anything, but it shows that maybe we care. It's better than a bandh because while it's business as usual, it shows pain, anger and solidarity. I hope we can take this route this time.
Stop tolerating this Bombay or we are dead. Stop turning the other cheek because every time you get back to business, it is simply an indication to others of your unlimited ability to take the biggest blows and walk out of it with a smile. Don't be paranoid. But don't tolerate anymore. It's 6 blasts, it could be more next time. Register your protest.
Please check out www.mumbaihelp.blogspot.com. And while all this is happening, Srinagar has been hit by another bomb blast.
L1 went into this telecon with a customer and the customer asks him "How are you?". He responds "my city has been rocked by 7 explosions" and went on to give him graphic details for the next 5 minutes. But here's the killer. The customer said "..i understand your frustration and your anger my friend... i was at ground zero the day it happened. let me know if you want to have today's session ...we can reschedule it when you are feeling better". How does L1 manage to meet such people?
Signing off - angry, concerned, hurt - and hoping that your near and dear ones escaped this dastardly act. And praying for the souls of those who were unlucky enough to be caught in this.

I believe, it is going to happen again..and again..and again.....till like you said so appropriately, we don't tell people Not to F**** with us! It is the people who live in top buildings, our so called leaders etc who needs to learn a lesson cause it is the common people who suffers not they or their family members! It is common citizen of India who has to deal with the pain, suffering, death of loved ones. I agree with TCP...things need to be done.. But the question is will our impotent goverment will do something about it..or like always will talk the talk but not walk the talk!!!!.....
We will see!!!!!!!!!
Do you seriously believe the government will do anything? They will issue statements comdemning it, visit the city, and that's it. I'm angry and frustrated, because no one is going to do anything about it. All they can think of doing is increasing quotas. The fools.
Well said cloudy. Interestingly, we all know how our so called leaders react and do! Don't even start about Quotas etc..... These are peacetime conversation.....What bothers me the common people know the tricks of the politicians trade but still the same people, who cheats them, form the face of the govt. Why are we stuck with the same people!
I guess, me and my other learned friends, can very well predict exactly what are BELOVED leaders are going to say!
salaam mumbai. Hope you land on your feet soon, i just got to know about the blasts.
It was really terrible, but as always the spirit of mumbai cud be seen everywhere. People rushed out to help immediately...there were queues of people wanting to donate blood... hostels, shops and everything opened up to provide free accomodation and food to the stranded.trucks and private vehicles doubled up as public transport tying to take in as many people as possible.....Will the people who called Mumbai a "rude" city please stand up!!
Has some one thought of this ---
Take a map, put a pin on it where there have been explosions, wars, bombs etc. and what do you get ??
The places that have muslims living there. Why is it ? Is it that they are by nature wild and rebellous or are they being used by "others" - This is not to blame them, but to find out why is this so ...Look at Isreal, Bali, Easter Europe, Afganistan, Iran, Iraq, Africa and so on..
I pray for the families of those who lost loved ones and those who are wounded by the bombs in Mumbai. I wish for them the strength to face this tragedy.
The government must capture the ones who are responsible for this and bring them to justice. No more of our countrymen should die such deaths just because terrorists think they can get away with these acts of horror.
This is a defining moment. The line must be drawn now!
I appreciate your social commitment. Good work
awesome post da... dont have enough words to add on to what you have written
I totally agree with u. I think its high time we (mumbaikars) stop taking this shit and raise our voice against every unethical, unfair activities. Its time to get together and let the whole world know that we will not tolerate this bullshit.
i agree totally with anonymous . why is it that wherever there are muslims there is violence ???????
I'm heart broken. One of my best friends lives in Mumbai and I've been trying to get in touch with him since yesterday and havent heard back from him yet. But don't you people see? Nothing is going to change. Nothing ever does. Nothing will shake those politicians out of their ivory towers and make them do something..anything! This will just be another 20 sec clipping on CNN. My heart is in India right now even if I can't be :(
Being far away, feel so helpless yet so concerned. The only thing, I can do is email or call up near ones.
I know the spirit of the people in the city will again rise up to the occasion. The city that never sleeps will try to heal itself.
But, I too agree we need our due. We do not need bandages anymore, we need our due, our right for infrastructure. We do not need subsidies, we need the tax which we pay, the wealth we generate to create a better Bombay for ourselves.
This is something we just can't do anything! we blame Pakistan for all such acts! But what our government doing to protect us? how does all the material comes into our country ? How terrerist enter into our country? Its not anyone else to be blamed, but our very own government and security! Why not protect our own cities? And I know that its going to happen again! Our politicians are not going to do a damn abt it! Only we need the people to stand and express ourselves! Until this happens, nothing is going to change. I am hurt! I was not there, but I still feel the pain! TV channels show documentory on 9/11 and 7/7, again and again! If they start making documentories on Indian tragedy, they need a new 24 hour channel to show these...
Obi, if you check this more often than your blog, let us know you are safe.
Yes cloudy, as I have already replied on my own blog, I AM SAFE :-) Was discussing 'the spirit of Mumbai' issue with TCP last night, and he referred to some of the things that he has written about in this post. Having been on the road during 26/7 last year as well as 11/07 this year, I have no words to praise Bombayiites. I saw people from all religions, all age groups, all SECs offering help to strangers in the form of water, biscuits, Frooti, tea... or just guidance about the high-traffic areas ahead and moral support! Being from Delhi, I can very confidently say that my hometown would have just turned it's back and gone to sleep. Not Bombay though. The spirit of Bombay is facing a lot of flak from various reporters, commentators, and concerned citizens, but I doubt if not working is an answer. Maybe what Bombay did, by turning out for work in large numbers the day after the blast is the way to go- not stopping work!
Definitely agree with you, Obi. Stopping work is no answer. Turning out in large numbers to work shows that no one is scared. It might looks as if we are taking everything lying down, but stopping work is even worse... (Relieved that one of my favourite pen pals is alive and kicking)
it really pisses me off when people talk about the spirit of bombayites...what the hell do they want? looks like they expect that people will brush of blood from their shirts and walk off calmly as if nothing has happened...the attitude seems to be...you know, the people of bombay are resilient...so let us throw shit and death at them and they won't really care. floods are man-made (if we had good roads, no encroachments, no cutting down of mangroves and good drainage, the city won't get flooded), scams are man-made, corruption is man-made and so are bombings (like desiguru says)...who the hell is responsible for all this shit...it is the people and it is high time they fixed it...the media is going to talk about it for a few days and once it stops being an interest item, everyone will just wait for the next (god-forbid) calamity to happen so that the cycle can start over again. it is sad...i was born and brought up in bombay like some of you and love the city a fair bit.i am disgusted to see it go down the drain the way it is happening now.
Let us see what the government and all those "social bodies" do with crises like this one...again.
@Revealed: We are with you. Let's hope your friend is safe and you hear from him real soon.
@Obi: We are glad you are safe.
@TCP: Hope your friends and family are safe. As you can see from the comments, we all agree with you and share your frusturation and grief. Its times like this that I hate the most - knowing what to do but being powerless to do it.. ;-(
What is all the crap about the spirit of the city. If we continue to display such spirit we will soon we wiped out of the face of earth.
Its not the time to pat our backs, nor the time to feel sorry for the victims, its time to take action.
1. No point is blaming the goverment, we the people are the goverment.
2. No point is expecting anything from the goverment, lets face facts and expect from ourselves.
3. Mumbai has no enemies and neither do its residents have any. Atleast not of such mentality who would blast innocent people. Mumbai is a pawn being used to twist the arms of Delhi.
4. We the people select our representative to be sent to Delhi. Are we evaluating them? Are they capable? Do we raise our voice when we dont like the candidate standing to be elected. Are we really bothered?
5. When there is a robbery going on at our neighbours place, would we like to get involved? Lets be honest. If someone is doing something wrong to someone else would we like to protect the oppressed?
6. Do we risk our lives to save our neighbours? Do we really have the time? Are we concerned? Really concerned?
When we dont stand up for others, they have to stand up for themselves.
When they do that, some of them may not be sensible people.
Since we are not concerned about others, neither are they concerned about us.
We have been selecting some fools to act as our leaders, who do not have understanding about human concerns and does not even know what words to use to defuse tension.
Let each of us accept our responsibility, let each one of us do something for others, let each one of us raise our voice against injustice even if it is a 1000 miles away, let each one of us fight opression even if it is not affecting our family members, let each one of us show concern, sympathy for other life forms.
ONLY THEN WILL SUCH UGLY VOILENCE STOP.
